- "Joseph Lowery, a distinguished civil rights leader and respected Methodist minister, helped to organize, along with Martin Luther King Jr., the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Referred to as the "dean of the civil rights movement," Lowery served as SCLC president from 1977 to 1997. For more than fifty years Lowery has been an unwavering champion of nonviolent resistance.
