- Biography:
- African American minister and civil rights activist; He served as chairman of the Nashville Student Movement from 1960 to 1961 and was a founding member of SNCC and of the SCLC. He organized civil rights protests in Nashville, Jackson, and Birmingham. In particular, he organized the Children's Crusade in Birmingham in 1964. Bevel and wife Diane Nash proposed the Selma to Montgomery March in 1965. Bevel was present at King's assassination. (Encyclopedia of African-American Civil Rights, 1992)
