Lillian Smith (1897-1966), author, lecturer, and human rights advocate, was born in Jasper County, Florida, and resided in Rabun County, Georgia. Her best known fiction piece was the controversial 1944 novel 'Strange Fruit'. The Lillian Smith Papers are arranged in two series of files. The first series includes manuscripts and proofs of several books, short writings, and biographical material. The second series is comprised of correspondence, business records, and manuscripts for the journal The South Today (formerly, The North Georgia Review, and Pseudopodia).
