- Army General William Westmoreland arrives at South Carolina State Capitol building and escorts his mother, Eugenia Talley Childs Westmoreland, to her seat. Mrs. Westmoreland receives standing ovation. The General's wife, Katherine, and son, James Ripley II, are introduced to the audience. Westmoreland speaks to joint session of General Assembly, stating that American military power has stopped Communist aggression in South Vietnam.
