- James Edwards, Jr. is convicted for breach of the peace (and additionally charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors) during the demonstrations at the South Carolina State House on March 2, 1961. Edwards is seated in chair, covering face with hands. Edwards comes out of Richland County Courthouse, shielding face with hat, surrounded by police and court officials, passes camera, and enters automobile. This ruling would be appealed and upheld by the South Carolina Supreme Court in December 1961, but the United States Supreme Court would overturn it in February 1963.
