- Description:
- In a press conference, South Carolina Governor Robert McNair calls upon those able to use their ""influence and good judgment"" to curb the violence. In Lamar, South Carolina, Jeryl Best (accused of being a ring leader in the incident) is interviewed. Comments on the violence at the school and denies any responsibility. Claims to have instructed the white parents to leave. These comments refer to the Lamar riots on March 3, 1970, when approximately 150-200 white men and women rioted in a violent response to court-ordered desegregation in Lamar, South Carolina. Rioters attacked buses carrying elementary to high school aged children, fought with law enforcement officers, and overturned two empty school buses that students had recently fled.
