- A bonfire near the campus of South Carolina State College. Students from Claflin and South Carolina State colleges had recently been protesting an all-white bowling alley that operated near the SC State campus. Governor McNair called members of the state's National Guard and Highway Patrol to protect the peace and enforce a city-wide curfew. During the bonfire the South Carolina State Highway patrol began firing into the crowd of protesters. Many people were injured, and three were killed during the incident.
