- Biography:
- The Rev. Charles Sherrod, a Baptist minister from Petersburg, Virginia, helped found Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He was jailed in Rock Hill, South Carolina in February of 1961 after a sit-in. He is best known for spearheading SNCC's efforts in southwest Georgia and was SNCC field secretary in Albany, Georgia from 1961 to 1967. He served as director of the Southwest Georgia Project for Community Education from 1961 to 1987 and as director of the cooperative farming project, New Communities, Inc., from 1969 to 1985. Sherrod served on the Albany City Commission from 1976 to 1990, and in 1996 ran unsuccessfully for Georgia State Senate.
