- Biography:
- George W. Crockett was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida before moving to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Morehouse College. Following his graduation from Morehouse, Crockett was accepted into law school at University of Michigan. He began working with UAW in the fair-employment division and was later asked to be part of the defense team in the Michigan Smith Act trial. Crockett was a major figure in the Mississippi voting project, serving as the head of the project's legal defense team. After a lengthy tenure as a criminal court judge in Detroit, Crockett was elected to five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He died at the age of 88 in 1997.
