- Description:
- Indiana's government endorsed a free education system for children, but not until 1869 did it create an act that provided for the education of African American children. The act states that "all children of the proper age, without regard to the race or color, shall hereafter be included" in the school districts, but it allowed for "separate schools” whenever possible. This mindset eventually led to the creation of Crispus Attucks High School (Attucks) in Indianapolis, and its story would forever be intertwined with the timeline of civil rights in the state.
