- Description:
- Alternative title: Restaurant Prices and Practices ... Rental Costs and Practices ... University Bookstore Operation Quote from document: "For the past few years, we, as part of the University community, have witnessed several very disturbing events take place in and around the U District, which is the focal point of many of our lives. We are no longer free to live as we wish in our own area, and our individual integrity and sense of justice are constantly being challenged. ... Most of us who live in this area must deal on the Ave. making us a captive market for the merchants who trade there." Calls for: Lower restaurant prices and no minimums. Places where "people can gather over a cup of coffee and simply sit and talk." Affordable rent prices and an end to "discriminatory practices," such as "refusing to rent to 'undesirables' and Negroes." University Bookstore reforms, such as better prices for used books, replacing the rebate system by "changing to a cash discount," less space taken up by "high-priced merchandise," more space made available for "a wider selection of books," and finally, "the Bookstore should be re-organized on a non-profit basis, which would exempt it from taxes." Note on date: 1967 is penciled on document.
