Calls For: Celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Seattle General Strike of 1919 Quote: "Seattle, February 6, 1919--The General Strike Begins Some 60,000 workers of Seattle walked off their jobs as the 10 AM whistle blew on February 6, 1919. As transportation stopped, schools closed, factories and shops shut, that city of 250,000 people lay silent. The first major general strike in America had begun... It was clear that much administrative work had to be done if the city was not to be left 'destitute,' as a scare headline in the Times declared it would be. These efforts were co-ordinated by a Strike Committee which set up large labor kitchens and exempted essential services... From the daily Seattle Union Record, Feb.4,1919--by Anna Louise Strong, On Thursday at 10 AM There will be many cheering and there will be some who fear. Both of these emotions are useful, but not too much of either..." Background Information: "The Seattle General Strike of February 1919 was the first city-wide labor action in America to be proclaimed a “general strike.” It led off a tumultuous era of post-World War I labor conflict that saw massive strikes shut down the nation's steel, coal, and meatpacking industries and threaten civil unrest in a dozen cities."
