- Description:
- Alternative title: An Experiment - Can Student Freedom be Tolerated at the University of Washington?? A New SDS Publication. Calls for: “We exist to abolish apathy on campus. If you think at all, if you have any opinions whatsoever, it is your duty, duty, duty to activate yourself and try to show others what you believe in.” Background information: “Seattle’s first brush with the [underground newspaper] phenomenon was a short-lived, mimeographed newsletter called the Seattle Barb published by four members of the UW SDS in January 1967. Only a few hundred copies of four editions saw the light of day, but the Barb’s use of profanity and its endorsement of homosexual rights stirred a massive storm. SDS, then headed by Gordon Peterson, repudiated the paper, and its publishers in turn repudiated SDS for having no sense of humor or backbone.” (Crowley, Walt. Rites of Passage: A Memoir of the Sixties in Seattle. Seattle: University of Washington Press. p. 61-62)
