- Description:
- Calls for: “Free Angela Davis!” Quote from document: “The attack on Angela Davis is not an isolated incident. It follows on the heels of the nationwide plot to murder and jail Black Panthers, the police murder of Chicano journalist Reuben Salazar, the conspiracy trials of anti-war activists, and the murder of United Mine Workers Union militant Joseph Yablonsky.” Background information: "Championing the cause of black prisoners in the 1960s and '70s, [Angela] Davis grew particularly attached to a young revolutionary, George Jackson, one of the so-called Soledad Brothers (after Soledad Prison). Jackson's brother Jonathan was among the four persons killed--including the trial judge--in an abortive escape and kidnapping attempt from the Hall of Justice in Marin county, California (August 7, 1970). Suspected of complicity, Davis was sought for arrest and became one of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's most wanted criminals. Arrested in New York City in October 1970, she was returned to California to face charges of kidnapping, murder, and conspiracyshe was acquitted of all charges by an all-white jury." (Angela Davis. Encyclopaedia Britannica. Retrieved February 12, 2004, from Encyclopaedia Britannica Online. http://www.search.eb.com/eb/article?eu=29975 ) Note on date: 1970 is penciled on document.
