- Description:
- Announces: Moncada anniversary celebration at the Aquatheater, 6:00 P.M., Sunday. Background information: On July 26, 1953, Fidel Castro led an attack on Moncada Barracks in Cuba. The attack failed and most of the rebels were tortured, killed, or imprisoned. Castro was brought to trial. Defending himself in court, he gained the people's support by sketching out a program of national reform. Though sentenced to imprisonment, he delivered his famous words, "Condemn me, it does not matter. History will absolve me!" (Perez-Stable, Marifeli. (1993). The Cuban Revolution: Origins, Course, and Legacy. New York: Oxford University Press. p. 53) Note on date: 1970 is penciled on document.
