- Description:
- Alternative title: Boycott Safeway Until They Sell Farm Worker Lettuce Calls for: "To convince Safeway to stop buying non-union lettuce, your dollars are important! Don't spend them at stores that keep farmworkers in 19th century conditions!!!" Quote from document: "When working in the fields of Salinas, California, a worker earns a penny for each head of lettuce he picks. What does a chain store charge for that same head of lettuce?" Background information: "In 1962 Cesar [Chavez] founded the National Farm Workers Association, later to become the United Farm Workers (UFW). He was joined by Dolores Huerta and the union was born ... By 1970 the UFW got grape growers to accept union contracts and had effectively organized most of that industry, at one point in time claiming 50,000 dues paying members." ( The Story of Cesar Chavez. Retrieved May 11, 2004, from UFW.org. http://www.ufw.org/cecstory.htm ) Note on date: 1970 is penciled on date.
