- Oral history.; Hartman Turnbow was born March 20, 1905 in Mileston, Mississippi.After living in Chicago, he and his wife relocated to Tchula, Mississippi.Turnbow, along with Hollis Watkins, Ozell Mitchell, and Alma Mitchell Carnegie, were part of the group known as the "First 14" who went to the Holmes County courthouse to attempt to register to vote.This action helped to spur on voter registration activism in Holmes County, Mississippi.He later went on to be a delegate for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and aided in its formation.
