- Oral history.; Erik Robert Fleming was born in 1965 in Chicago, Illinois.He graduated from Lindblom Technical High School and went on to attend Jackson State University on academic scholarship, earning a degree in political science.Fleming worked for Ray Mabus in his 1987 campaign for governor, and Mike Parker in his 1988 campaign for US Congress.In 1993, he was campaign manager for Henry J. Kirksey in his bid to become Jackson's first African American mayor.Then Fleming worked for Ronnie Musgrove in his 1995 campaign for lieutenant governor.With Musgrove's victory, Fleming became the first African American to serve as sergeant-at-arms of the Mississippi Senate in 1996. In January 1999, he was elected to finish the unexpired term of Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green.He was then re-elected to two full four-year terms in the Mississippi Legislature.
