- Description:
- From the Miller (Michael J.) Civil Rights Collection; The report gives details about the economic shut out of poor African Americans that occurred during the 1960s due to greater plantation mechanization. The report includes transcribed meetings and press conferences with poor Mississippians who want to attract the attention of the federal government with political organizing and civil disobedience. The report preserves the text from a telegram the group sent to President Johnson and the White House's reply. The accounts of impoverished citizens criticize Mississippi welfare programs and describe an act of civil disobedience in which a group of African Americans occupied empty barracks on a Greenville military base and were thrown out by troops. The document also includes excerpts from voter education and political education handbooks created to increase citizen awareness of avenues for political action.
