- Description:
- In this WSB newsfilm clip possibly from June 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. apparently responds to a question regarding the African American use of the principle of nonviolence. King asserts that African Americans in the South believe in nonviolence as a way to achieve new freedoms. Continuing, King suggests that while African Americans may not adhere to the principles of nonviolence in daily living, they recognize the victories civil rights has achieved through nonviolence. King emphasizes that while some African Americans may resort to violence, the majority of the population does not support such action. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. studied the example of Mahatma Gandhi using nonviolent, direct action protests in achieving Indian independence and believed nonviolence was the only way for African Americans to achieve political and economic freedom.
