- Description:
- Letter written March 5, 1956 to Edmund Orgill, mayor of Memphis, Tennessee by a D. T. Nettles. In the letter, Nettles asserts that he is against putting an African American on the board of the John Gaston Hospital, as are ninety nine per cent of those he has talked with on the subject. Nettles suggests that if African Americans don't like the way of whites, they should go back to Africa; he also affirms that the Bible is against racial integration. Nettles writes, "I am for 128% white supremacy. Let's keep American 100% white from the negro race." The letter was written in response to Mayor Orgill's request for citizen comment on putting an African American on the board of John Gaston Hospital.
