- Description:
- In this somewhat tongue-in-cheek letter, Blatt displays a certain amount of pride at being labeled a segregationist. While Blatt was perhaps less outspoken than other white leaders, a 1966 speech against a compulsory education bill led many to see him in the same light as proponents of massive resistance such as Congressman Albert Watson. After 1966, Blatt's influence began to wane as the so-called Young Turks in the state legislature gathered support to replace him as Speaker. Blatt would however not step down as Speaker until 1973. Blatt also references Gerald L.K. Smith, the anti-Semitic radio preacher and anti-communist political activist from Detroit.
