- Description:
- Blatt had a large birthday party every year. In this letter, he regrets that his close friend Judge J.B. "Bubba" Ness cannot attend this year. Ness was born in Manning, SC, but grew up not far from Blatt in Denmark, SC. Like Blatt, he was the son of Jewish immigrants. In 1938 Blatt lent Ness $500 so that he could attend law school, and their friendship grew from that point. After graduating, Ness practiced law in Bamberg before becoming a circuit court judge in 1958. He joined the South Carolina Supreme Court in 1974, becoming chief justice in 1985.
