- Democrat Butler Derrick represented South Carolina's Third District in the United States House of Representatives from 1975 until 1995. Just as Blatt opposed Carter for refusing to provide more funds to the Allied plant in Barnwell, he opposed Butler Derrick for the same reason. Derrick believed that the plant wasted taxpayer funds and threatened the environment. Blatt believed that closing of the plant would cost Barnwell county precious jobs and hurt the local economy.
