- Description:
- The 1970 governor's race in South Carolina was up to that point only the second one in the twentieth century in which a Republican candidate mounted a serious campaign. Even though Watson had been Blatt's "good friend for many years," Blatt could not support Watson because of his attacks against the legislature's handling of the budget. In March of 1970, Watson became somewhat unpopular as a candidate because of his role in encouraging mob action in Lamar, SC over the integration of the public schools there. West defeated Watson in 1970 and later served as ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Watson did not seek public office again, instead becoming an administrative law judge until his retirement.
