- Description:
- This series of documents deals with the controversy surrounding the so-called Barnwell Ring. Strom Thurmond ran his 1946 gubernatorial campaign in part against Blatt and President Pro Tempore of the South Carolina State Senate, Edgar Brown. Both Brown and Blatt were from Barnwell. Thurmond believed that these two men had far too much influence in state government. Not surprisingly, Blatt supported James McLeod of Florence against Thurmond in the Democratic Party run-off. Even though Blatt easily defeated Hugh Quattlebaum in the Democratic race for his own House seat, the election was especially trying for him. To avoid more controversy, he decided not to run for Speaker of the House during the next session. Blatt reclaimed the speakership in 1951 and held the position until 1973. The Barnwell Ring accusations continued throughout his career, however. Democrat gubernatorial candidate Donald Russell, for example, ran against the Barnwell Ring during his losing campaign of 1958.
