- Description:
- Folder 2 of Records of the South Carolina Council on Human Relations collection contains administrative documents and general papers from January 17, 1942-August 28, 1945. The folder comprises mainly of correspondence between senior leadership of the South Carolina Division of the Southern Regional Council (SC Division of the SRC) discussing membership. Found in this folder is a comprehensive report on African American involvement and representation in motion pictures, titled, "Report on The Negroes and Motion Pictures" (note that "negro" was a common, accepted term used to call African Americans). There is also a report recounting the efforts of the Richland County Committee of the State Committee on Interracial Cooperation on some common issues faced by African Americans, as well as three copies of "A Statement on the Race Problem in South Carolina." Both documents detail the lack of park and recreation areas, no representation on juries, and poor education facilities and opportunities. There is also a letter from Lillian Smith to Guy B. Johnson in which she writes to decline membership to the Southern Regional Council (SRC).
