- Folder 1 of Records of the South Carolina Council on Human Relations (SCCHR) collection comprises mainly of correspondence concerning early committee activities of the South Carolina Committee on Interracial Cooperation (before the inception of the SCCHR) between September 1934 to October 1941. There are select documents concerning a meeting on issues of inter-racial relations held on June 24, 1941. The proposed document for the meeting was written by some of the African American members. The document delineates issues, like equality of education facilities and areas of recreation (playgrounds, parks, etc.), the right of African Americans to franchise and tax supported hospitalization, and improved wage conditions for domestics and laborers. Other correspondence, between higher-up members like Rebecca Reid, James B. Murphy, and McPherson Mashburn Goss concern committee organization, the scope of committees, and gaining more members that are representative of the communities and issues.
