- Description:
- South Carolina Governor Robert McNair holds a press conference and answers questions following the shooting of unarmed protesters by S. C. Highway Patrol officers in Orangeburg. (Despite statements of sniper fire, there is no evidence that anyone in the crowd shot at officers or carried guns.) The protesters were primarily students from Claflin University and SC State College (SC State University), protesting a segregated bowling alley. Three students were killed and over 30 were injured. Governor McNair declares a state of emergency and imposes a curfew.
