- Marian Bruce Logan was a cabaret singer who performed in clubs in New York, London, and Paris. She recorded a single album, Halfway to Dawn, before marrying Dr. Arthur C. Logan, personal physician to Duke Ellington, and subsequently retiring from the stage. Logan later worked with Jackie Robinson and the Student Emergency Fund, which helped African-American students make their tuition payments.
Logan came to the attention of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who asked for her assistance in raising funds for the non-violent protests organized by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She was the first Northern member of the board and remained with the organization until 1969. In 1977 she was appointed the Human Rights Commissioner of New York City by the mayor, Abraham Beame.
While serving as Human Rights Commissioner, Logan was invited to join B.A.S.I.C. (Black Americans to Support Israel Committee) on a tour of Israel to evaluate human rights concerns regarding a community of Black Hebrews living in Dimona, Israel. She went to Israel twice: first in 1977 and again in 1981. - Metadata URL:
