- Description:
- Nine page report prepared by Isaiah DeQuincey Newman, field secretary of the South Carolina Conference of Branches, NAACP, dated August 20- October 12, 1962. The report begins with a summary of fundraising, membership, travel, and correspondence; this is followed by an annotated schedule itemizing work and meetings conducted on behalf of the organization throughout the time period of the report. Activities mentioned in the schedule include numerous membership and fundraising efforts across the state, including the planning of an event to celebrate the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation. The report ends with a series of statewide updates on the organization of new NAACP branches, and civil rights issues that include employment equality; freedom to demonstrate; school desegregation lawsuits involving Clemson College, University of South Carolina, and Clarendon County; and the desegregation of hospitals and lunch counters.
