- Description:
- Seven pages of a typewritten speech with handwritten notes revised November 18, 1983. The speech recounts the initial desegregation of the University of South Carolina during Reconstruction in 1873, and its subsequent closure to African Americans from 1877 to 1963. The speech recognizes the achievements of African American students and faculty at the University of South Carolina during Reconstruction, and after the university desegregated for the second time in 1963. The remainder of the speech regrets the opportunities lost to African Americans after the reinstatement of segregation at the university, celebrates the 110-year presence of African Americans at the university, and pledges goodwill in race relations.
