- Description:
- An oral history interview by William Gravely on December 15, 1989, with Joyce ""Joicy"" Davis, stepdaughter to Woodrow Wilson Clardy (a defendant in the court case for suspected participants in the lynching of Willie Earle) and half-sister to fellow interviewee Ruth Clardy. Davis recalls an incident which was life-changing regarding her racial awareness and understanding on the morning after the lynching, when conversation in the break-room at her place of employment had turned to the events of the night before, she had spoken unthinkingly of her stepfather's involvement (and using a derogatory racial term), and an African American cleaning woman stood up against it. Other topics include Davis' family background, awareness of the events of the lynching and the trial, and later events in the lives of those involved. A draft transcript and Gravely's notes on the interview are included.
