- An oral history interview by William Gravely with Mark Tolbert and A.J. Whittenberg Jr. on December 16, 1982. Topics covered in the interview include the political history locally and statewide prior to the lynching of willie Earle in 1947, seeing Earle's body before it was embalmed, Tolbert and Whittenberg's memories of the events after the lynching (including the arrests and trial of suspected members of the lynch mob), whether or not Earle did in fact attack and fatally wound a taxi driver (as he was accused of doing so before he was kidnapped from the local jail and lynched), and other symptoms and notable incidents of racial tension in the area. A draft transcript and notes are included with the interview.
