- Gladys Allen was born in Ridgeway, South Carolina, where she and her four siblings grew up on their grandparents' farm. She attended elementary school in Ridgeway, Fairfield High School in Winnsboro, and Benedict College in Columbia. Jean A. McCrory was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina, where she and her seven siblings grew up on their family's farm. She attended elementary school in a community school, and Fairfield High School in Winnsboro. After graduation she returned to Fairfield County, where she was the first African-American employee of the Bank of Fairfield, in Winnsboro. This oral history interview with Gladys Allen and Jean A. McCrory on October 26, 2017 includes a discussion of growing up in Fairfield County, South Carolina, childhood memories, grandparents, farming, education, polio, Maude Ross, high school and college, race relations past and present, the Ku Klux Klan, the Orangeburg Massacre, racism, voting, and what they would like to see come out of the interview.
