- Civil rights activist Septima Clark, left, speaks at the University of South Carolina. Clark recently received a Living Legend award from President Jimmy Carter. Clark, who started teaching in 1918, was once fired from her teaching job in Charleston because she was a member of the NAACP. Clark was also associated with the Highlander School and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the 1950s and 1960s.
