- Description:
- NAACP representatives deliver a proclamation to Gov. Richard Riley urging action to improve education for African-American students in South Carolina. Delivering the proclamation are (left to right): Margaret Bush Wilson, chairwoman of the board of the NAACP; state NAACP conference president Dr. W. F. Gibson of Greenville; Benjamin Hooks, executive director of the NAACP; and state NAACP field director Isaac Williams. The NAACP is hosting a meeting in Columbia to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education landmark Supreme Court case ordering the desegregation of public schools. South Carolina played a role in this case by bringing forward the Briggs vs. Elliott court case in Clarendon County, S.C. relating to school integration.
