- A Confederate flag is raised at the Lexington County Court House to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. Representative Floyd Spence, president of the Lexington County Historical Society, is at the podium. Seated left to right behind him are Edward L. Wright, president of the Richland County Historical Society, L. B. Addy, mayor pro-tempore of Lexington, Richard Jackson, commander of the South Carolina chapter of the Sons of the Confederacy, Representative John May, guest speaker, and Senator Francis Jones of Lexington County. The three men on the right are unidentified. The South Carolina Confederate Centennial Committee and the Lexington County Historical Society conducted the event, which was reported to be the first Confederate flag raising over a government building in the modern era.
