- A member of the South Carolina National Guard crouches behind a row of Highway Patrol cars during civil rights protests in Orangeburg. Students from Claflin and South Carolina State colleges had recently been protesting an all-white bowling alley that operated near the SC State campus. Governor McNair called members of the state's National Guard and Highway Patrol to protect the peace and enforce a city-wide curfew.
