- Description:
- South Carolina Highway Patrolmen crouch behind a row of cars following a violent suppression of civil rights protests in Orangeburg. Students from Claflin and South Carolina State colleges had recently been protesting an all-white bowling alley that operated near the SC State campus. On February 8, Highway Patrol firing into a crowd of protesters injured many and killed 3 students. Following these incidents law enforcement officers remained armed and ready in Orangeburg to enforce a city-wide curfew and to maintain order.
