- State legislators wear Confederate flag vests in support of Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett's vow to stop the integration of the University of Mississippi. The legislators are Rep. A. W. (Red) Bethea of Dillon, left, Rep. Mitchell Ott of Orangeburg, standing, and Rep. Fred Connor of Orangeburg. The three are looking over a draft of an appeal to S.C. legislators to encourage S.C. Governor Hollings to support Gov. Barnett in his stand against integration, also known as the Mississippi Crisis. The legislators are meeting in the Wade Hampton Hotel to draft the support document.
