- Description:
- Protesters march along the fence at the Columbia Airport while supporters sit on the roof of the airport terminal. Protest signs read "Remember 1948? South Carolina lost by bolting from the party" and "Bessinger is a loser, and so is Wallace. South Carolina needs winners." Alabama Governor George C. Wallace is visiting Columbia as part of a southern tour for unpledged presidential electors to place him on the November ballot as a candidate for U.S. President. Maurice Bessinger, state chairman of the Wallace for President Committee, arranged Wallace's visit to Columbia.
