- U.S. Senator James O. Eastland of Mississippi speaks at a state-wide rally of South Carolina Citizens' Councils being held at the Township Auditorium. The Councils oppose integration of South Carolina schools and other civil-rights related federal legislation. On the stage are S.C. Representative L. Mendel Rivers (left with glasses), Rev. L. B. McCord of Clarendon County (next to the podium), Strom Thurmond (behind Eastland), and Speaker of the S.C. House of Representatives Sol Blatt (right). The Senator's speech is being broadcast by several local radio stations.
