- Description:
- Around 50 college students from Benedict and Allen stage a sit-in, referred to as a "sit-down" in The State newspaper, at the lunch counter at Woolworth's on Main Street. As soon as the students entered the restaurant area of Woolworth's, staff placed "This Section Closed" signs, visible on the counters, and stopped service to those sections. The students, most wearing overcoats and suits with ties, sat at the counter with books, allowed their photographs to be taken, spoke with reporters, and then left as a group to stage a second sit-in at S.H. Kress.
