- Description:
- A group of people, some holding a banner for the Chicago-based Operation PUSH, begin a four-mile march from Strom Thurmond High School to the Edgefield Town Center in support of congress extending the parts of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that are set to expire in 1982. The provisions of the act require some Southern states and certain other counties outside the South to notify the U.S. Justice Department before changing any election laws. Rev. Jesse Jackson, president of Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), along with the Edgefield branch of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) sponsored the march which began with a prayer service outside the high school.
