- Description:
- After a prayer service at Strom Thurmond High School, around 1,000 people take part in a four-mile march to the Edgefield Town Square from the school in support of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, parts of which are set to expire in 1982. The march was sponsored by Jesse Jackson's Chicago-based Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) and the Edgefield County branch of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). Marchers carry various signs including an Operation PUSH banner.
