- Description:
- Jesse Jackson stands at a microphone in front of Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield County during a day which included a prayer service and a four-mile march by around 1,000 people to raise awareness about the importance of extending the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Portions of the act are set to expire in 1982 and Jackson, national president of Operation PUSH, along with the Edgefield branch of the NAACP sponsored the march from the high school to the Edgefield Town Square. The Edgefield County school board initially denied permission for the group to assemble on school grounds, a ruling which was overturned by a federal judge.
