- Description:
- A man leads a group, including James L. Felder, second from the left, and Rev. Jesse Jackson, third from the left, in prayer in front of Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield County. The group was praying before a four-mile march from the high school to the Edgefield Town Square in support of extending the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Jackson, along with Operation PUSH and the Edgefield County chapter of the NAACP headed by Nathaniel Jackson, planned the march in support of Congress extending the parts of the Voting Rights Act that are set to expire in 1982. The provisions of the act require some Southern states and certain other counties outside the South to notify the U.S. Justice Department before changing any election laws.
