Demonstrators participating in the Poor People's March at Lafayette Park and on Connecticut Avenue, Washington, D.C. In May 1968 Ralph David Abernathy organized the Poor People's Campaign March on Washington, D.C. Hoping to bring attention to the plight of the nation's impoverished, he constructed huts in the nation's capital, precipitating a showdown with the police.
