- Description:
- A University of North Carolina sociologist, Howard W. Odum was one of the founders of the Southern Regional Council. Previously, he had been the president of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation.
Photograph of sociologist Howard Odum in his office at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He sits at his desk, which is covered in papers. Shelves of books line the walls behind him. Wearing a three-piece suit, he faces slightly left.
Odum was one of the founders of the Southern Regional Council (SRC), a reform-oriented organization whose headquarters are now in Atlanta, Georgia. The SRC is considered the successor organization to the Commission on Interracial Cooperation (CIC), with which it merged in 1944, and thus traces its history back to 1919. During the late 1940s and 1950s the SRC was unique in its focus on interracial cooperation and struggled against massive resistance in the South. The organization continues to promote voter registration, political awareness, and racial equality. - Metadata URL:
